Looking for a short break with a difference? Hotel-based in the heart of characterful, medieval Mons in Southern Belgium, enjoy daytime cruising along the intimate waterways of Wonderful Wallonia in armchair comfort aboard the ‘Natalia’. This hybrid-electric vessel operates as a type of floating ‘observation lounge’, meandering through the region’s lesser scaled canals. With included lunches and bar on board, enjoy the gentle pace, the close-up scenery plus the great boat lift of Strépy-Thieur. A visit to the excellent Memorial 1815, the site of the Battle of Waterloo, is also included
ITINERARY
DAY 1 Head to Dover to cross to France and Belgium. Check in for 3 or 4 nights at centrally located 3* B&B Hotel Mons Centre. First night dinner (set menu) at a local restaurant and remaining nights BB
DAY 2 – 3 (OR 4) At leisure in Mons with two included excursions
5-day tour only either a free day in Mons or optional excursion to Dinant
INCLUDED EXCURSIONS (BOTH TOURS) Mons & Cruise to Strépy-Thieur with lunch Enjoy a guided walking tour of medieval Mons – a small town with a big history! Embark Natalia for lunch and a gentle cruise east along the Canal du Centre to the amazing Strépy-Thieu funicular lift, an absolute must see and the second largest boat lift in the world with a 73m incline. Once through the lift, re-board the coach back to Mons by way of St Symphorien Military Cemetery
Cruise to Ronquières with lunch & Memorial 1815 Natalia cruises across the great aqueduct at Sart to reach the second great structure, the 1.4km long 67m-fall inclined plane at Ronquières. It takes 50 minutes to pass through whilst you enjoy your onboard lunch. Drive to Memorial 1815 on the site of the Battle of Waterloo with the excellent multi-sensory Memorial Museum and the Lion’s Mound
which marks the front line French and English troops (226 steps)
Natalia Barge has an ‘observation lounge’ with armchair seating plus an outdoor area. It cruises very quietly on hybrid electric engines and is fully air- conditioned / heated. It is step-free on board and there are toilets. Cold buffet lunch plus complimentary bar (selected drinks incl tea & coffee) is available
5-day tour only – optional excursion to Dinant Head to striking Dinant with its unique steep rock face location along the banks of the River Meuse.
