A day at leisure in Lille - With Christmas approaching, Lille is decked out in lights and colour and the whole town seems to be covered in festive decorations and garlands. On Place Rihour (approx. 15 minutes' walk from the hotel) you will find around 80 wooden chalets teeming with gift ideas, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. There are not just regional specialities here but also crafts and artisan goods from further afield as well.
Christmas Truce Tour & Ypres
Travel to Ploegsteert Wood, scene of one of the most poignant events in human history when sworn enemies dropped their weapons, clambered out of trenches and crossed the shell-blasted mud of No Man's land to shake hands, sing carols and exchange gifts. Whilst several impromptu football matches are believed to have taken place up and down the front line, the most famous occurred at St Yvon in the fields of Ploegsteert - known to the Tommies as 'Plugstreet'. A wooden cross marks the site at St Yvon and weather permitting, a visit will be made to the UEFA monument depicting a ball on top of a shattered shell half buried in the mud of a Flanders battlefield. Please note that this is located some distance down a track inaccessible by coach and that a walk of approximately one hour is required to visit it. Pass by Messines and the nearby Irish Peace Park and New Zealand memorial on the way to Ypres where there will be time for refreshments and a visit to the Christmas market. Your tour manager will take you on a brief guided walking tour of the city.
DAY 4 - After breakfast, continue on to Calais and the return Channel crossing and the journey home.
