Founded as Augusta Treverorum in 15 BC, Trier grew to become capital of the Western Roman Empire by the third century AD and is now home to northern Europe's finest ensemble of Roman monuments including the magnificent Porta Nigra gate, elaborate thermal baths and amphitheatre. Also known for being the birthplace of Karl Marx, atmospheric Trier sits right on the Moselle, surrounded by vineyards and you will enjoy an included panoramic river cruise (NB boats do not operate in February or November and a city tour of Trier with a local guide has therefore been included instead for those departure dates only). On the return to Vianden head through the charming region known as 'Little Switzerland'.
