DAY 1 - From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to your designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. Continue via the auto-routes of France and Belgium, crossing into Holland and on to your hotel on the edge of Volendam. Welcome dinner, bed & breakfast.
DAYS 2-4 -At leisure in Volendam with two included excursions. Bed & breakfast.
A short coach transfer will be provided into the centre of the village. Here you can sample superb fish dishes or genuine Dutch apple pie with whipped cream. There will be an opportunity to visit a cheese farm and watch skilled craftsmen making Dutch clogs. You can enjoy a full day in Volendam returning to your hotel at leisure (approx. 30 mins walk / 3km or alternatively there is a regular public bus service). You may like to take a boat trip (not included) on the former Zuiderzee to characterful Marken (once an island and now linked by a causeway to the mainland) with its characteristic houses.
Alternatively you may like to join an optional excursion to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen (entrance not included approx. €16 pp) which depicts everyday life around the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk (IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) changed the sea into the IJsselmeer in 1932. There is an open-air section with authentic working buildings brought here from around the region and faithfully reconstructed plus an indoor section full of photography, history and an extraordinary collection of wooden ships.
Leiden & Noordwijk
Lively Leiden, birthplace of Rembrandt, is home to the Netherlands' oldest and most prestigious university where Einstein was a researcher for a decade. Its complicated network of picturesque canals weave passed wonderful 17th century buildings and its ancient centre is riddled with a maze of narrow lanes bursting with a multitude of bars and cafes patronised by the thirsty student population. Continue to the North Sea coast to blow the cobwebs away in Noordwijk with its 13km of blue flag sandy beaches and dunes.
Guided Amsterdam City Tour
Your coach will take you into Amsterdam where you can explore at your leisure or alternatively stay aboard for the optional comprehensive guided city tour to see the many places of interest - such as the flea market, the floating flower market, the Royal Palace, the Rijksmuseum and the former Jewish quarter. There is also an optional guided tour of a diamond factory.
During the day there may also be opportunity to take a canal cruise through the parts of this lovely city accessible only from its many canals and waterways. The fare for this optional cruise will be advised by your driver. There will be free time in the afternoon to visit museums and art galleries or maybe just enjoy the atmosphere of this beautiful city.
DAY 5 - After breakfast, we travel back through Belgium and France to Calais for our return to England.
