      Château Retreat Weekender
Château Retreat Weekender Historic châteaux, rambling estates, ancient cathedrals...

Get away from it all for the weekend with this first class short break staying at the magnificent Château Tilques, located just a short drive from Calais, set in beautiful parkland. Built in 1891 on the ruins of a 17th century manor house, the gabled Flemish-style château is just a few kilometres from the attractive market town of Saint Omer and is right on the doorstep of the Audomarois marshlands nature reserve with its wealth of flora, fauna and wildlife. With excellent leisure facilities on site as well as outstanding dining and some included local visits, this relaxing Château break is sure to recharge the batteries.

• 2 nights at Château Tilques with dinner & breakfast

• Pre-dinner aperitif on first night (Kir)

• Excursion to Saint Omer

• Visit to Boulonge

• Porterage

The Château is surrounded by 4 hectares of lovely grounds which feature scenic walks, a tennis court and an aviary. There is also an indoor pool and a bicycle rental service. The 52 guestrooms with stunning park views, are split between the Château itself and the Pavillon. The gourmet restaurant "Le Vert Mesnil' is situated in the elegantly transformed 17th century stable building and there is also a comfortable lounge bar and terrace (complete with giant chessboard). There are no lifts but there are some ground floor rooms.

DAY 1 - From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to the designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, you will travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. Less than an hour after leaving the port you will be checking in to your own Château for the weekend. An aperitif will be served this evening before a memorable dinner in the restaurant. Dinner, bed & breakfast.

DAY 2 - After a leisurely breakfast, you may like to join the included visits to Saint Omer as well as the optional afternoon excursion to the Audomarois Marshes. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening in the Château restaurant. Dinner, bed & breakfast.

Saint Omer
Charming Saint Omer with its architectural gems such as the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral and the ruins of Saint Bertin's Abbey is well worth a visit. At the heart of the town is the impressive main square, Place du Maréchal Foch, where the weekly market is held on a Saturday morning. The stunning public gardens are also well worth a visit. Return to the Château for a relaxed afternoon or join the optional visit to the Audomarois Marshes.

Audomarois Marshes
The National Nature Reserve of the Audomarois Marshes are today the only remaining cultivated wetlands in France. This marvellous ecosystem covers 35km2 and is home to over 200 species of birds as well as 300 varieties of plants. You will visit the 'Maison du Marais', the rather futuristic but sympathetically constructed exhibition for the region where you will learn more about the history, the habitat and the biodiversity of the marshes. Then take a ride (approx 1 hour) through the waterways on a bacôve, a traditional wooden boat.

DAY 3 - Today it is adieu to Château Tilques as you head to back to the coast for a stop in Boulogne with its lovely 'high' town encircled by a 13th century wall. Then it's on to Calais and the return Channel crossing and the journey home.
