Beloved by generations of middle Europe's movers and shakers, from Austrian Royals to influential writers, Merano, with its medieval centre, leafy boulevards, sunny microclimate and art nouveau villas still draws health-conscious visitors who come to benefit from its therapeutic traditions. Return via the famous wine route of Alto Adige with a stop at Lake Caldaro.
Bolzano & Renon
Head off to Bolzano, the capital of the Dolomites, with the chance to Ötzi, the famous Ice Man, naturally mummified in ice for over 5,000 years (Museum entrance not included). Continue to Renon, a spectacular area of peaks and plateaus with the opportunity of an optional cable car and narrow gauge railway trip to reach the heart of this region, viewing the earth pyramids and beautiful scenery along the way.
Brenta Dolomites for a Day
A day touring the region as you head to Lake Toblino, one of the most romantic lakes in Trentino. The vegetation here is positively Mediterranean due to the mild climate and the highlight is the fairtytale 12th century Toblino Castle on the lakeshore. After a stop, continue to Pinzolo, a tiny jewel nestled amongst the Dolomites, with its ancient church of S. Virgilio, dating back to 1362, with its amazing frescos (Triumph of Death and the Macabre Dance). The coach will climb up to the popular ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio at 1550m. Known as the Pearl of the Brenta Dolomites, the village with all its cafes and restaurants makes a great place to stop for the afternoon and from the centre of town you may like to explore the mountains on one of the gondola lifts (fare not included).
Riva del Garda
The resort of Riva del Garda, based on the north point of stunningly beautiful Lake Garda, has plenty going on, with a charming pedestrianised, medieval centre and lakeside promenade.
